How to Muslim

Start Here: Your First Steps in Islam

This page gives you two routes. If you’re still looking into Islam, work through the questions in the order people usually ask them. If you’ve just become Muslim, start with wudu and salah, then build from there. Both roads meet at the shahada. Nothing here assumes you already know anything.

Start here

Wherever you are on this, there’s a next step.

Some people land on this page still deciding. Some landed here Muslim for four days, holding a prayer mat, unsure what to do at 5am on a Tuesday. Both roads are below.

Road one

Where do I start if I’m looking into Islam?

Most people arrive with one question, not eleven. Find yours, start there, and ignore the rest until you want them. The stops below run in the order they usually come up.

Both roads meet here: the shahada

It is one sentence, said with belief, and it makes you Muslim. There is nothing to book and nobody whose permission you need. Plenty of people say it at a mosque with witnesses, which is a lovely thing to do, but that is not the part that counts.

How to take your shahada

Already said it? Then keep going. Everything below this point is written for you.

Road two

What should a new Muslim learn first?

Your first week does not need everything on this website. It needs wudu, salah, and somebody to tell you that feeling behind is normal and temporary. Work down the road in order. Nobody is timing you.

The whole map

Everything else on the site

The two roads cover the beginning. This is the rest of it, grouped so you can find something without hunting through the menu.

The Prophet

His life, his household, and how he treated people.

One thing, if you do nothing else today

Nothing on this page has a fixed order except wudu before salah. So pick the smallest thing. Download the New Muslim Guide and read the first few pages, or come and say salaam in a Discord community we recommend, so you are not doing this on your own.

Your Next Step

Learn About Islam

Islam gives you a purpose: worship the One who made you, and build for the life after this one. Six sections, meant to be read in order, nothing assumed.

New to all of this? Start from the beginning.
