How to Muslim

What Is the Hijab?

Hijab comes from the Arabic root hajaba, to cover. In practice it is a dress code for Muslim women from puberty, covering the body, with most scholars excepting the face and hands. It comes off around other women and close male relatives. It also covers how you speak and behave, and that part applies to men too.

The Hijab

What the hijab actually is

Hijab comes from the Arabic root hajaba, to cover or conceal. In practice it is a dress code for Muslim women from puberty onwards: covering the body, with most scholars excepting the face and hands. It comes off around other women and close male relatives.

Treating it as only a piece of cloth misses most of what it is. Hijab also covers how you speak, how you carry yourself and how you behave, and that part is required of men just as much.

Men are not exempt from any of this. They have their own dress code, loose and not revealing. And in the Quran the command to lower the gaze is given to men first, in the verse immediately before the one addressed to women. Modesty was never designed to rest on women alone.

What it is responding to

In a lot of societies a girl learns early that her worth tracks how she looks. The standards are unreachable by design, and they keep moving. In that environment everything about a person that cannot be seen counts for very little.

Islam measures differently: character and action, not features nobody chose. Hijab moves the question of your worth off your appearance and onto things anyone can actually build. Piety. Knowledge. What you contribute.

And every woman wearing one is a person, not a category. Judging all of them from a single item of clothing is lazy, and it is usually wrong.

What it protects

The aim is a society where people are not constantly assessing each other on sight. That helps everyone, not only women.

Islam is not squeamish about desire. It limits public display, then actively encourages love, affection and intimacy between married couples in private. The question is where it belongs, not whether it is shameful.

Obsession with appearance does real damage. People go to genuinely harmful lengths to feel acceptable. Hijab quietens the running commentary about how you look, and most women who wear it describe that as a relief rather than a restriction.

“O Prophet! Ask your wives, daughters, and believing women to draw their cloaks over their bodies.”
Quran 33:59

This is not a new idea

Muslim women are following a long line of righteous women, Maryam (Mary) the mother of Isa (Jesus) among them. Covering appears in the Bible too.

What the hijab is not

Most of what people believe about it falls into one of these.

“True equality will arrive when women do not need to display themselves to be valued, and do not need to defend their decision to keep their bodies to themselves.”
